빨간 모자, 빨간 목도리의 두 아이를 위해
끔찍한 하루였다. 우리는 위대하고 영광스러운 이 나라에서 가장 황량한 지역을 지나고 있었다. 하지만 그날 아침 이 나라는 위대하지도, 영광스럽지도 않았다. 단테가 지옥을 묘사할 때 머릿속에 그렸음직한 우중충한 분위기였다.
기차가 몇 분 전에 멎었다. 이유는 알 수 없다. 누구도 구태여 이유를 알려고 하지 않았다. 진눈깨비가 끊이지 않고 뿌려댔다. 을씨년스러운 갈색 들판과 시들어가는 옥수숫대의 행렬이 기찻길을 따라 길게 절망적인 풍경을 펼쳐놓고 있었다.
기찻길에서 200미터쯤 떨어진 곳에 농가 한 채가 보였다. 평범하고 소박한 집이었다. 지난 24시간 내내 본 다른 농가들과 마찬가지로 페인트칠과 보수가 절실해 보였다. 게다가 성직자가 죄를 증오하는 것처럼 미적 감각을 증오하는 목수가 지은 듯 너무 볼품없는 집이었다.
그 집에서 두 아이가 나왔다. 남자아이와 여자아이였다. 열두 살쯤 되었을까? 아니면 열네 살? 확실한 나이를 가늠하기 어려웠다. 아이들은 털모자를 쓰고 목도리를 둘렀는데, 모자와 목도리, 장갑까지 온통 빨간색이었다. 멀리서 봐도 아무렇게나 짠 옷이라는 걸 알 수 있을 만큼 조잡했다. 물론 추위도 막는 데는 지장이 없다. 하지만 좀 더 정성을 들였더라면 보기에도 아주 좋았을 텐데.
두 아이는 진창 속을 미끄러져 오더니 길가에 서서 우리가 탄 기차를 바라보았다. 기차가 무척 신기했던 모양이다. 그 아이들에게 기차는 다른 세계와 연결해주는 고리다. 분홍색 전등갓 아래 식탁에서 구운 과자를 먹는 세계, 여자들이 형형색색의 화려한 옷을 입은 세계, 남자들이 한 시간쯤 여유롭게 빈둥거리며 책과 연극과 세상을 이야기하는 세계, 유용성의 관념 아래 모든 것을 가차 없이 희생하지 않아도 되는 세계.....
아마도 두 아이는 그 멋진 세계를 눈으로 보지 못할 것이다. 하지만 혹시 기적이라도 일어나 기차가 아이들의 마음을 고결한 호기심으로 채워줄지도 모른다. 그러면 아이들은 삶을 아름답고 예쁘고 재미있게 만들어주는 모든 것들을 찾으러 나설 테고, 집이라고 부르는 지긋지긋한 곳, 초라하고 더럽고 절망적인 곳을 벗어나 더 좋고 높고 흥미로운 세계로 뛰어들 것이다.
이런 상념에 사로잡혀 있을 때 미처 보지 못했던 것이 내 눈에 들어왔다. 초라한 빨간 모자와 목도리 차림의 여자아이가 단단히 움켜쥔 파란색 화첩이었다. 거기에는 미술 시간에 제출할 그림들이 들어 있을 것이다. 또한 남자아이도 초라한 빨간 모자와 목소리 차림이었지만 손에 반짝이는 검은색 바이올린 가방을 들고 있었다.
상세하게 말했지만 거기서 있었던 일은 그게 전부다. 기적소리가 세 번 길게 울렸다. 제동수가 기차에 오르자 바퀴가 미끄러운 철로 위를 구르기 시작했다. 우리는 더 추악하고 더 황량한 세상 - 실은 빼어나게 아름다워 질 수도 있었던 세상 - 을 향해 다시 여행길을 떠났다.
나는 뒤쪽의 전망차로 가서 두개의 빨간 점이 점점 작아지는 모습을 지켜보았다. 지난 20년 동안 나는 모든 예술을 한 권의 책으로 담아내기 위해 자료를 모았다. 그러나 그때까지는 감히 그 일에 착수할 용기가 나지 않았다. 뭔가 걱정스러운 게 남아있었다. 어떤 '관점'에서 책을 써야 할까? 어떤 독자를 염두에 두고 써야 할까?
한 가지만은 확실했다. 예술을 전공하는 학생을 위해 책을 쓸 의도는 없었따. 그들은이미 수많은 논문, 열 권의 분류목록, 스무 권의 서적, 과거, 현재, 미래 모든 거장들의 회화, 드로잉, 에칭을 담은 서른 권의 호화판 화보집 속에서 허우적거리고 있다. 또한 나는 예술가들을 위해 책을 쓸 의도도 없었다. 진정으로 자신의 일을 아는 예술가라면 책을 읽을 만큼 한가한 시간이 없을 것이다. 게다가 재능 없는 예술가가 내 책을 읽으면 오히려 헛된 노력에 집착하게 되고, 결국은 시간, 돈, 힘을 낭비하게 될 것이다.
도덕과 교훈을 얻으려는 목적에서 예술을 사랑하는 귀부인들, "예술은 모르지만 나름의 취향은 있다"고 생각하는 그들의 남편들에게도 내 글은 읽을거리가 못 된다. 그들이 바라는 마음의 평화나 영혼의 행복에 보탬이 될 만한 것을 이 책에서 찾을 수 없을 테니까.
그렇게 생각하던 중 갑자기 모든 것이 분명해졌다. 나는 '관점'을 확고하게 잡았다. 내가 쓰려는 책이 누구에게 필요한지 정확히 깨닫게 되자 결심할 수 있었다. 나는 바로 그 빨간 목도리를 두르고 빨간 모자를 쓴 두 아이를 위해 책을 쓸 것이다. 바이올린 가방과 화첩을 든 아이들, 우리가 탄 기차를 하염없이 바라보던 그 가엾은 아이들을 위해.
